Saxophone

My first YouTube video, Perfectionism

In learning to play the Saxophone, my #1 goal has always been to advance to the point where my playing will positively impact other. During my journey, I have had a few opportunities to play in-in-front of live crowds, but I’ve became a perfectionist and never really felt ready.

Perfectionism  has its advantages and disadvantages.  For my practice routine, it’s great. I play my scales over and over and won’t stop until I can play them straight, without error. This has helped with improvisation, tone production and the ability to play in multiple keys.

On the other hand, perfectionism has prevented me from experiencing the adjustments needed for live playing. Perfectionism has also caused me to doubt my playing abilities.

In releasing to the world, my first YouTube video, my opinion has changed. While I personally observed three “mistakes” , the general feedback received has been positive. This is a vital lesson learned;  sometimes you won’t be ready, but you still have to take the plunge.
